Forklift Operator Certification

Offered at: Goodwill Career Center,
271 E. Apple Ave., Muskegon
Schedule:
Mondays and Wednesdays 3:30-6:30pm
Total Program Hours: 18 hours
Program Duration: 3 weeks

Receive a Forklift Operator Certificate to prepare you for a job in the manufacturing, transportation, or warehouse industry.

Learn and develop effective forklift safety and operation skills, resulting in forklift operator license. Gain experience on a variety of trucks including electric and gas, stand up and sit down operation, and basic pallet jacks. Course format includes classroom as well as hands-on activities to enhance learning and increase understanding of concepts. Students will be evaluated throughout the course to ensure concepts are being learned and retained for transfer to the workplace. This course will also support job launch activities including resume writing, job search, interview prep, job retention, and basic budgeting. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand forklift safety and pre-operation checks
  • Identify truck controls and instrumentation
  • Understand engine or motor operation, and steering and maneuvering including fork adaptation, operation, use, and limitations
  • Job site awareness and hazard analysis
  • Learn principles of capacity, stability, and load management
  • Understand vehicle refueling and recharging of batteries
  • Understand visibility concerns, including restrictions due to loading
  • Identify vehicle capacity, explain how to maintain vehicle stability, and vehicle limitations
  • Understand the impact of surface conditions and load composition
  • Understand load manipulation, stacking, and unstacking
  • Understand operating instructions, warnings, and precaution for the types of truck the operator
  • Demonstrate proficient operator skills on a forklift leading to forklift certification
