Receive a HVAC-R Certificate to prepare you for an in-demand career and obtain a pathway to becoming a licensed technician.

Learn and develop safety and operation skills, resulting in HVAC-R Certification. Students gain hands-on experience on a variety of units. Course format includes primarily hands-on learning where each student will work on their own unit. A variety of troubleshooting opportunities will be provided to enhance learning and increase understanding of concepts. Students will be evaluated throughout the course to ensure concepts are being learned and retained for transfer to the workplace.

HVAC technicians work on the systems that control the temperature, humidity, and quality of the air in our homes, workplaces, and all other types of buildings. To become an HVAC technician, you will need to work as an apprentice under a licensed technician for up to 2,000 hours. Apprenticeships are competitive and this formal training and a “work ready” certificate significantly improves your chances of success. Most technicians start as assistants, and progress to an apprentice, to ultimately become a fully certified HVAC technician.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Obtain a fundamental understanding of basic commercial refrigeration and heating systems including circuit wiring, reading schematics, brazing, and soldering
  • Learn proper installation and operation of HVAC-R systems
  • Understand EPA laws related to safe handling and transport of refrigerants
  • Learn proper recovery, recycling, and retrofitting of refrigerants
  • Take the EPA Refrigerant Handling Certification assessment required to handle commercial refrigerant
