MUSKEGON – Goodwill Industries of West Michigan was recently awarded a $213,678 grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) for the purchase of two handicap-accessible mini-vans and two light-duty buses. These vehicles will be used to transport individuals with disabilities to job sites, community outings, and local events.
“We are so grateful to have additional transportation solutions for our program participants,” said Mission Services Director Kiesha Guy. “The vehicles will allow us to transport groups and individuals to community work sites and training opportunities.”
Two minivans were received in early January, and two light-duty buses are expected to be delivered sometime in March.
“Compared to our old van, these new vehicles have made a big difference in terms of accessibility for some of our program participants with physical disabilities,” said Goodwill Habilitation Trainer Leann Broughton. “The low threshold makes it very easy for people with limited mobility to enter, and an easy-to-use fold-down ramp accommodates walkers and wheelchairs.”
