Lori Holden joined Goodwill in December 2023 following her release from a two-year prison sentence. Despite her time in prison, Lori maintains a positive outlook, describing it as “necessary for reflection and change.” Upon her release, she encountered numerous challenges. Without a support network, housing, employment, transportation, or food, Lori was paroled to Muskegon County.
Her parole officer referred her to Goodwill’s Offender Success Program, where she met Resource Navigator Gretchen Damm and Career Coach Joe Gordon. Gretchen, understanding Lori’s situation, provided essential resources, including a personal hygiene kit, bus tokens, and basic food supplies. Lori also worked with Joe, who assisted her with resume building, job readiness training, and employer connections. Through his support, Lori secured a position at Goodwill’s Muskegon Apple Avenue store.
Soon after starting, Lori faced new challenges when her daughter became ill, requiring her to divide her time between Muskegon and Ludington to care for her. Consequently, she lost her job at the Apple Avenue store due to excessive absences. However, in March, 2024, Lori was able to transition to the Ludington Goodwill Store with a fresh start and the ability to care for her daughter. There, she met Goodwill Resource Navigator Melissa Clark at the Mason County Parole Office. Melissa continued Goodwill’s support by providing bus tokens and guiding Lori through the process of applying for rental housing. She helped Lori navigate the complexities of the housing voucher program, ensuring Lori could access stable housing and focus on her new role at the Ludington store.
Since December 2023, Lori’s journey has brightened considerably. Those who meet her immediately recognize her sincerity and resilience. Lori shared that her experiences with Goodwill have been overwhelmingly positive, especially valuing the people she has met along the way. She began as a Retail Associate and has now progressed to Head Cashier at the Ludington Goodwill Store. Lori is preparing to lead her first staff meeting—a testament to her leadership and growth within the organization. Goodwill’s Offender Success Program, along with its dedicated team members, provided the resources and encouragement Lori needed. Knowing how far she’s come, Lori now has hope and confidence in her future, supported by a community that believes in her.
