Supported Employment

Supported Employment
Recognizing the need for community-based employment for individuals with disabilities, Goodwill established the first supported employment program in the Muskegon community. Targeted primarily toward people with developmental disabilities or mental illness, this model of service is intended for individuals who can benefit from closely supported training and ongoing support from a Goodwill employment specialist in order to make a successful adjustment to the job. The program combines job development with job coaching and long-term follow-up to maximize employment potential.
In this service, a person is placed into a job in the community that meets his/her interest and basic abilities. The employment specialist (or "job coach") then works one-on-one with the individual to help him/her learn the specific job duties and requirements. Once the individual is job stable, the job coach "fades" from the job site over time, as the individual becomes more independent. Individuals eligible for the program are referred from Michigan Rehabilitation Services. Job coaching is also available to persons referred by private rehabilitation companies.
In addition to individual supported employment services, Goodwill provides a long-term "enclave" model of employment support. The enclave employment service is established through community partnerships of employers who hire several Goodwill clients. As with individual supported employment placements, the employment specialist provides ongoing training, support and supervision for the team of employees and ensures quality and production standards for the employer.
