Facility-Based Employment

Work Activity/Skill Building Program

This program is available as a service option for persons with developmental disabilities who need long-term, facility-based training and employment, or who choose not to seek community-based employment. Participants are referred from Community Mental Health Services of Muskegon County, MAISD, local school districts and other referral sources.

Persons develop basic work skills, as well as a paycheck, from working in Goodwill's Industrial Services Center, retail processing, or janitorial department. Most jobs are piece-rated and participants are paid a commensurate wage. For those individuals enrolled in long-term service placements, Goodwill provides holiday, vacation, and sick time benefits.

The majority of program participants work in Goodwill's Industrial Services Center which provides real work opportunities such as packaging and assembly through subcontract arrangements with area businesses and manufacturers.

An on-site medical room, in addition to first aid and CPR-trained staff meet the special health and emergency needs of those served. Goodwill is also affiliated with Hackley Occupational Health Clinic, which provides general examinations, testing, treatment, and other work-related medical services.

Transportation services to and from facility-based programs and services are arranged as needed in cooperation with Pioneer Resources, MATS, etc.

The Work Activity/Skill Building Program uses the curriculum "Goodwill Works" developed by Goodwill Industries International, that, in addition to work-related skills, encompasses social and life skills instruction to increase the effectiveness of program/service outcomes for individuals served.
