Career Development

Goodwill's career development services provide information and skills needed for an individual to develop, plan for, and acquire career goals.

ASSESSMENT

A variety of employment assessment tools are available to assist our clients in learning about their current skill levels, vocational interests, and aptitudes.

Educational Assessment is used to determine an individual's functioning level in reading and mathematics. This information is used for persons planning to enroll in a vocational training program. Based on the results, the individual may choose to enroll in a basic skills remediation program, a GED preparation program, or directly into a vocational training program.

Situational Assessment is used to enhance the ability of our clients to make career choices by placing them in real-life, time-limited work experiences in the area of their occupational preference. This technique focuses on the participant's response to coworkers, environmental factors, supervised direction, work demands, and overall work culture.

Vocational Interest Testing helps individuals identify career areas of high interest. This is especially useful for individuals who are uncertain of their career goals, or who have limited work experience or exposure to the world of work.

Vocational Aptitude Assessment and Work Samples provide individuals with the opportunity to complete a variety of standardized work samples in order to gain information regarding their vocational capabilities, as well as their physical capacity and stamina.

CAREER EXPLORATION

This service provides the participant the opportunity to acquire information regarding the structure and requirements of specific occupations. In addition, information regarding the local labor market, including the demand and availability of various occupations is shared. Goodwill's career resource library, as well as Internet workstations to the Michigan Talent Bank and Michigan's Job Bank, are located at Goodwill's Workforce Development Center and made available to the public. Goodwill also hosts a curriculum-based program that addresses a variety of job search topics including applying for a job, resume development, cover letters, interviewing, finding job leads, and job retention strategies.

CAREER PLANNING

Professional career counselors are available to assist participants in reviewing all the information gathered in the assessment and career exploration process. Career counselors facilitate the decision-making process leading to a structured plan with specific career objectives.
