Goodwill receives ISO 9001:2000 certification for industrial services

Goodwill Industries of West Michigan (GIWM) is pleased to announce that it has received ISO 9001:2000 certification for its Industrial Services Division. GIWM is one of only 18 Goodwill Industries organizations internationally (out of 169 member organizations) that have achieved an ISO certification.

"We are proud to have accomplished ISO 9001:2000 certification for our industrial division," said GIWM President & CEO Richard Carlson. "ISO's quality management system formalizes our ongoing efforts to improve processes and efficiencies, and assists us in meeting our customers' requirements and expectations."

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world's largest developer of International Standards with a network of national standard institutes of more than 150 countries. ISO 9001:2000 quality management system provides organizations with a means to demonstrate its ability to provide products/services that meet customer and regulatory requirements. It also includes processes for continual improvement of the system and corrective actions to maintain quality.

"For our customers, our certification to ISO standards means that they can be assured that the development of their products are compliant with standards that are globally accepted and often required by their own customers, " said GIWM Industrial Services Director John Zervas. "Certification also opens us up to a greater pool of potential customers."

Third-party auditor QMI-SAI Global recommended the certification on July 31, following its two-day audit of Goodwill's Industrial Services facility July 29-30.

The audit report states: "The auditor found excellence throughout all processes audited. No nonconformances were issued. The organization has done a tremendous job of preparing for registration, and has managed to keep processes focused on necessary and value-added activities, while maintaining simplicity."

Regarding customer satisfaction, the auditor concludes: "The organization's focus upon customers is larger and more varied than is typical. ‘Customers' in this case includes not only the typical external and internal customers, but also includes the [program] ‘participants' and multiple community agencies that sponsor the participants. All parties appear to be well served, with excellent two-way communication. No problems were found."

Goodwill's Industrial Services Division provides support manufacturing services for a variety of West Michigan businesses and manufacturers. The registration covers the quality management system for light assembly, disassembly, packaging and labeling, mailing services, inspection and rework, sorting and collating, and miscellaneous manufacturing support services. Goodwill's Industrial Services Center is housed within Goodwill's headquarter facility on Apple Avenue in Muskegon and offers 12,800 square feet of flexible build-to-suit industrial space for custom projects. The center's workforce is comprised of over 150 persons with disabilities or persons with other disadvantaging conditions. Customers of Goodwill's Industrial Services Division include: ADAC Automotive, Alcoa Howmet Castings, Knoll, TGW-Ermanco, and many others.
