Goodwill store moves to new location

MUSKEGON — Goodwill Industries of West Michigan (GIWM) plans to shut down its thriving 1974 East Sherman Blvd. store and donation center on January 13, and re-open for business in a new location … just next door. The grand opening of the new store, at 1934 East Sherman, is set for Friday, January 16. Doors open at 9:00 a.m.

"With each store we develop, we learn and improve from the last," said Goodwill Retail Director James Cherney. "In addition to exceptional values, the store offers a very pleasant shopping environment, and an easy and convenient donation experience."

Renovation on the 12,000 square-foot, free-standing building began last September, transforming the site once occupied by DynaTorque, into one of Goodwill's signature stores. The new store is a build-to-suit lease arrangement with Redstone Development of Spring Lake, with Winberg Construction of Montague handling the construction.

The original Goodwill Sherman store location opened for business in December 2001. "Despite several area retailers like Target moving to the Lakes Mall area, the Sherman retail corridor remains very strong. Our customers and donors, who live or work nearby, requested that we continue to service this area," Cherney said.

The new store is bright and airy, featuring soft colors and plenty of windows and natural light. A large, covered donation "drive-thru" is located on the east side of the building. Grand opening festivities include giveaways, refreshments, and — as part of a long-standing tradition — a $100 bill hidden somewhere in the store.

The very first Goodwill Optical center opened within the original Sherman store back in June 2006. It too is moving to the new facility with a built-in, fully equipped exam room. The discount optical center offers a large selection of quality eye frames, as well as eye exams by a licensed Doctor of Optometry.

GIWM operates 13 store and donation center locations, including: Allendale, Fremont, Grand Haven, Holland (2), Ludington, Manistee, Muskegon, Newaygo, Norton Shores, Roosevelt Park, and Whitehall. Store hours are 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.

The mission of Goodwill Industries of West Michigan, Inc. is to provide work opportunities and skill development for people with barriers to employment. Goodwill's employment and training services are made possible through the community's generous support of material donations and the sale/purchase of these goods through its network of retail stores. Over 90% of the revenue generated from Goodwill retail stores is directly channeled into Goodwill's job training programs. For more info: www.goodwillwm.org
